Day 4: Spinning

Stationary Bike Hours: 1 hr

Enter the 21st Century.
Call me a Luddite because adult gyms scare me! Since graduating college I haven't really been to a gym for full-fledged adults. I went to a Bogor gym to make use of their free 2 week gym trial so I can use their stationary bikes until I get my own bike. Personal trainers, pre-set workout schedules to achieve the desired "body of my lifestyle", toss in some head veils, dress pants, assorted Nike gear, and thumping music and you've got an upper-middle class Indonesian gym. The entrance reminded me of a movie theatre entrance. I miss the good old days of college gyms. After much annoyance on behalf of the sales rep - I have my two week free membership! I definitely felt out of place - my clothes smelled a little funk from the public bus ride over, my shoes were still caked in dirt from the hash run the previous day, and my workout clothes consisted of my high school gym shorts and a shirt with an obvious hole in the armpit. I was the antithesis of a gym-goer. When did we need a whole new set of clothes to go to the gym?

Spinning, a.k.a. RPM.
I could see how the thumping music, lights, and motivating instructor could be amazing after a tedious day in the office - get some B.E.P. going and thinking about how you'd like to go "Office Space" the next day. I'm tempted to go back this Friday. It was
a good workout, I admit.

Life.
Before leaving to the gym I was greeted by my students in "Palagama" (kind of like ROTC) doing a little PT.

Keep it up, kids.

  1. Hi Mark,

Just to say best of luck with your trip... i´m not sure I have any tips. I loved cycling in Indonesia, I´m sure you will too.

Climbing Gunung Merapi was a real higlight - definitely worth the steep climb to get there, and much quieter than Bromo - also worth seeing though.

    Have fun

  2. Thanks Sam! In a few days I may or may not be joining a group to central Java. I'll just have to wait and see.
