Man:Mechanic Shop::Me:Bike Shop
I finally found an open bike shop! I also found out why they were closed yesterday - they're never open on Mondays. I walked in as if I knew what I was talking about. Yes, I've cycled and I know the basics of bike mechanics. When it comes to brands, styles, and subtle differences I'm completely obtuse. I know that it is folly to assume greater knowledge than is true, but my approach to this dream is to dispel doubt.
"What do you think would be best for the Indonesian mountains?"
(Translation) "I have no idea, tell me what I need to know"
Why not enter the shop and let them know I'm at a complete loss about the gear I'll need for an Indonesian cross-country bike ride? Maybe I'm the man in the mechanic shop - a mixture of misplaced pride and concern about his wallet. On the bright side, there's a possible bike for 4.7 million Rp! It seems like a lot - if it's good as they say it is and I can bargain it down to 4 million Rp, it might not be such a bad purchase. Next week a friend who knows bikes will help me assess it!
Training
Today was my weekly Bogor Hash House Harriers run! I linked the facebook group. This is a group run through awesome settings like the foot of a mountain, rice paddies, across rivers, etc. This is always the highlight of my week when I get out there. It's an hour bus ride (at least) from where I live and takes an entire half-day, but so worth it. I will post pictures next time... I remembered my camera was in the locked car moments before we set off hashing. Since being here, I've found it astonishing how much the flora looks like the flora in the States. At one point I felt like I was trail running in Northern California mountains. As for cycling, even though I don't have a bike, tomorrow I will go to the Bogor gym to do some stationary bike work and maybe even join their spinning class. I have no idea why I didn't think about this option as I was running around with my head cut off looking for a bike.
Life
My friends, this blog is also about my life in Indonesia. Teaching still has its ups and downs. I'm frustrated at my new co-teacher, but I'm also frustrated at myself. Some days I have a smooth teaching day - the kids love me and I love the kids. Other days I'm completely drained of energy and I'm not sure anyone learned a single thing or found my lessons exciting. Career teachers who do it with all their heart are amazing people.
